In the game there is a new villain called Hideyoshi and Soki, the new hero of the game. Soki is with bleached blond hair warrior who is trying to save medieval Japan from demonic invasion. During his journey in 16th century Japan, he is joined on his quest by group of companions who range from a young ninja girl named after a legendary samurai to a Spaniard with arms like Frankenstein’s monster. Of course, Soki and his group run into more villains than just Hideyoshi.

Although the game is at times disjointed and ineptly translated, it has well-choreographed cutscenes. Between missions, Soki gets the opportunity to nag his companions. Onimusha Dawn of Dreams tries to tell a compelling story but it fails as the script is full of clichés. On the whole, the game is very similar in tone and style to the previous Onimusha stories and if you have played the previous games of the series, you just know what is in store with Onimusha Dawn of Dreams.

The also boasts of an unlockable co-op mode for two players but unfortunately it is rather well hidden. When you finish the game, you unlock a two-player arena battle mode and not the co-op mode. Many of the cutscenes feature all five heroes standing together and preparing for the fight. However, when it comes to the actual fighting it is usually just you along with a single ally fighting the enemies.

In addition to all the fighting, there are quite a lot of puzzles in the game. The puzzles are pretty fun to do and the end results are well worth the effort. You also can use different weapons and you can upgrade your weapons by spending the red souls you have absorbed from the slain enemies. As you progress in the game, you learn more and more abilities as your next enemies keep getting bigger and tougher.
